The Offer You Can't Refuse.

This weekend, A pedal excursion is in the works. For many of you out there pedaling pleasure will be had, be it on the pavement, gravel or perhaps your kitchen. Awesome! It's gonna be stellar outside and cycles will be out in droves.

But for our little gang of rag-tag individuals (and hopefully some new faces) The plan still stands Stan. Meet 11am-ish. Downtown Blue Line. Pedal Excursion to Follow. At a nice Chatty-Cathy pace, with sudden bursts of glory because people that commute can be Freaky-Fast as well. And yes, that is a shout out to you Roadies who I'm sure are eager to hit the pavement after all the sweat that has been poured out on top tubes with miles spent in the basement to the tune of old Giro's or the morning traffic report with Jim Siedlicki.
*Hint Sarcasm.Hint Sarcasm.Hint Sarcasm.*

If you are wise cracker and  enjoy waking up early and stuffing your face with food like most of the general population. Then I cordially invite you over to my humble abode for some hearty eats of the breakfast persuasion. It will most likely be eggs, toast, salted butter, and hash browns. But who knows it could also include hot cross buns or Steel Cut Oats, ( yes I'm talking to you Brady of Steel) so you don't really wanna miss this.

It all goes down at the House on Paper Street.

Activate!

Activate Omaha is shaking things Up!

Hello all!

There is a bill proposed in the legislature that I am sure you are aware of: LB 134. This would prohibit the use of eminent domain by Papio NRD's when building recreational trails. If passed, this would have a devastating affect on the ability to expand the trail system throughout the state. Normally they do not use this technique to acquire land, but if there is one, single hold-out on a whole trail system, it could eliminate the entire project. I believe this was introduced on behalf of a small number of landowners in Cass County affected by the planned trail from Omaha to Lincoln. If you have not done so I would encourage you and your peers to let your senators know how you feel. There is a hearing on this bill tomorrow at 1:30 PM in Lincoln before the Natural Resources Committee.(Happened Last Week Oops) Members are:

Sen. Chris Langemeier, Chairperson clangemeier@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Tom Carlson tcarlson@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Tanya Cook tcook@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Annette Dubas adubas@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Deb Fischer dfischer@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Ken Haar khaar@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Beau McCoy bmccoy@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Ken Schilz kschilz@leg.ne.gov

Furthermore, Papio NRD will be down there testifying on the passage of LB 160 which is their bonding bill. This would allow them a funding mechanism to build both water quantity and water quality structures. With these lakes, they usually design a trail around them. There are other elements of the bill to assist in funding the raising of levees and implementation of low impact development environmental situations. The ability to issue bonds would be within their current mil levy authority which is 4.5 cents. They currently assess about 3.5 cents on the dollar. The hearing is scheduled after LB 134. I sincerely encourage you and your peers to contact the above senators and express a favorable vote on LB 160.

Thank you!

Dundee Streetscape Redesign

Hello there everyone. There's an opportunity coming up for for us to advocate for better bicycle infrastructure right in Dundee. Apparently the neighborhood association is thinking about freshening up the feel of the area and is looking for public input. As many of us as possible should show up to push for bicycle-friendly additions (e.g. more bike racks, "share the road" signs, etc.).

Marty Shukert will be one of the leaders of the event. For those of you who don't know, Marty has been doing quite a bit of work through his design firm (RDG Planning and Design) and Activate Omaha (he's on the Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee) to design east/west bike routes throughout Omaha. He's also a cyclist himself, so he should be able to offer a friendly ear.

The brainstorming sessions are at Dundee Presbyterian Church (located at Happy Hollow and Underwood) and will be occuring at the following times:

Thursday, January 29th, 10am - 7:30 pm
Friday, January 30th, 9:30am - 5:30pm

This should be a pretty informal event. You can drop in for just a minute or two, or you can stick around for a few hours. The most important thing is that a bunch of us actually stop in and tell them what we want.

It seems like they need some Pedal Pushers!

Don't Eat that Clif Bar

May be old news to some, But I stuff these in my face quite often and hope the dust settles soon.

If you like PB on/in everything then get to clicking.

A new plan...

Well as is common in Nebraska, the forecast is almost never correct. But I'm still planning the same ride but I'm looking at Saturday now. The weather says up around 40 and sunny. I'll be leaving from 72 and Pacific. I know that it isn't a 80 mile long haul enduro ride but if anyone is interested the meeting place is Blue Line 14th and Cuming Streets, 11-ish . Just some fun Pedal rotations from downtown area to Manawa or down to minneola and back.

Bring yourself, pants and a bicycle in good working order.

Bridge Access

Where is the access to the pedestrian bridge downtown? Is it down by the riverfront drive by Ricks Boatyard Cafe? or further north?

The Weekender/Frame Worthy Friday

Kona Sleepless in the Saddle 24 hr Granby Colorado 2005

We made it one more week, and I'm glad I can safely secure it beneath my belt and be done with it. So in the spirit of Festivus and all things Great, I offer up a weekend of Fun-N-Games, Mischief, Hi jinks and healthy spoonful of Hearty Eats.

If you're feeling lucky, then head on over to Bikemasters for their 12 hours of Troy. Dave gets pretty stoked for the indoor spin by including some of his personal favorite flicks. And you Do Not have to ride the entire 12 hours, just come and do whatever fits within your busy Saturday.
-Oh yeah it starts at 6am-

Don't even try to get tickets for Fortnight's show tomorrow at the Slowdown, because yep they're sold out. A band with another name for Fancy Manuscript is also playing with them. I have never heard of them though. So with that said I just may leave after Fortnight's set is complete.

Oh one more thing, this is why you deliver on a Bicycle.

Planing a ride

I'm lookin' to plan a ride for wednesday if the weather forecast holds true. I'll be leaving from 72nd and Pacific around 10ish, ride'n through downtown and lookin to make it to the Wabash trailhead in CB. I'll be happy if I make it to Lake Manawa and If I'm feelin' spunky I might go as far as Mineola. If anyone is interested or has any tips, let me know.

MLK Ride Crashed by Mr. Freeze

Monday morning. Early. Blue Line. Rafal's MLK loop was shortened due to my improper foot covering and cold temps, yet it was highly enjoyable and worthy of a small visit from the blue toes and frosty giblets. What a motley crew our dynamic made.

A 40 mile(?) loop through the quaint streets of Bellevue, across the toll-bridge (thanks for picking up the tab EB) then back up across a few miles long rock garden of freshly laid large-chunk gravel rock, then connecting to the trails system hooking back up to the ped bridge.

All-round sentiments of satisfaction for the ride were felt and life goes on. There are a few photos from the venture at the end of the gallery listed below.

On Sunday, I borrowed EB's La Cruz for a 65 mile venture back from relatives in David City. It was a stellar ride with 45 miles of it being rolling gravel roads. The bike is awesome. There's nothing like being in control on gravel going 35+ mph. I averaged 20 for the ride, and it was a breeze of an epic ride. I felt untouchable.

~ A funny note on the image gallery. People take pictures of their bikes when they go on journeys such as this. Do endurance runners take their shoes off and take pictures of them when they hit up epic runs? How about swimmers? It's kinda a funny thing, but that is kinda what makes a bike special. You can take pictures of the bicycle on trips like it is you -- a part of you, detached only for the moment before you mount again and pedal on. The passion of gear, hardware, rubber, metal, and pedal runs deep my friends.

EB, I didn't find anywhere for Mr. Freeze to fit in, so I just threw him in on the bottom.

Apartment Fever

Due to the recent cold weather conditions, some of us have resorted to indoor riding, but instead of busting out the stationary trainer, or the cadence smoothing rollers, why not embark on a new adventure of pedaling fury.

You will probably be called crazy, but the carpet thrashing is really a lot of fun and it will sharpen the hell out of your bike handling skills. I think we should get an underground circuit thru everyone's apartments, houses, caves and bordellos. Drink beer, and paint the town red.

Clean bikes are a must -- especially if you are married to partners without penises. Or partners with... there's nothing wrong with that!

Thursday evening Cinema Center closed it's doors for good, ending a run of spilled popcorn, post film discussions and kids pedaling to see Movies they shouldn't be allowed into. I recall many instances where I went there for a flick, even as a young boy my friend Cory and I would run or Pedal on snow packed icy sidewalks all in the name of Cinema.

After reading Bob Fischbach's article tears streamed down my cheekbones and I realized that was it, We'll always have the memories.

A BIG RIDE

Who would be up for a big ride sometime this summer? Last year I went out with some friends and rode the Triple Bypass in Colorado which is a great event. Unfortunately the registration is full for 2009.

I know there are some other good, tough rides out there that would be good times. Enchanted Circle in New Mexico, the California Death Ride, and I'm sure there are many others. It'd probably be a cool time to take a long weekend and head west this summer to ride in the mountains on an organized ride or something.

Any other ideas out there?

MLK DAY RIDE

Well it looks like the cold wave will be over this weekend. I'm sure everyone will be scrambling to go and try to get more riding in after the brutal and cold week. Monday is a federal holiday there are some people( including me ...yes) that have day off from work or school. With temps in 40's on Monday i figured hey let go and ride.
Here the scoop for the Monday festivities
  • Meet at 8:30 am @ Blue Line Downtown (coffee talk) leave around 9 am
  • Hit up the trails on IA side as proposed by map

So here at PedalOmaha I would like to begin reviewing some of the products that I consistently thrash, rip, break, wear,pedal.... you get the point.

But in all honesty, My life depends on these products.

A Sweaty Mess after 3 mile commute

Somehow, even in 2 degree weather, with a 15mph head/cross wind, I got sweaty while riding into work today.  How is that possible you ask?  Head to toe, I was wearing:
3M Thinsulate gloves
bike shorts
leg warmers
Mountain Hardware knickers
Smarwool socks over lightweight cycling socks
cycling shoes.

And that's it.  I've commented before that the Voler longsleeve thermal jacket is the warmest piece of clothing I own.  I can layer down with 4 different wool shirts and not be as warm as I am in this jacket.

The best part about the commute today was a block from work, a guy walking along the sidewalk stopped dead in his tracks, covers his eyes from the sun while barely peering out of a heavy hooded jacket and asks happily as I ride by, "Nice day for a ride, huh?"

I do concur, sir.  I do concur.

Photo Corner

Thought I'd share a few images of the cold, the people and the pedaling of recent days. I saw a few of you out last night while I was running. Negative 15 felt very cold. My fingers were pained for hours afterwards.

snow jealousy + new steed

Weather report from Oklahoma City = no snow = much more boring riding that you Nebraskans are having. Oddly enough, I'm jealous.

Lucassclown and EB have already snuck a peek, but I figured I'd post a snap shot of my new two-wheeled vehicle. Salivate.

Movie Monday Sans Motor

You've all  heard  chitter and chatter(I don't think those are real words but I like em) regarding Monday and how it's that dreaded day where the alarm  keeps buzzing or the song keeps repeating. Anywho, I often hear these quot ables run through my mind "Just another Manic Monday", or "Sounds like a case of the Mondays".

So in the spirit of Monday and all of it's mundane-ness, I offer Movie Monday sans motor.
As many of you know I freaking love Film Streams, and enjoy seeing flicks multiple times a week. They are now offering free admission to the film of your choice every Monday for UNO students.
Just whip-out that MavCard and  poof, its free. So anyone wishing to Pedal on down for a show can meet me at 35th St. just north of Dodge. (HintHint:Look for lights that blink)

Ah yes the meeting time is 6:12 p.m.
Be sure to wear helmets &  friends that flash
Show starts at 6:45 or This at 7:00 p.m.

MONDAY:: 100% Chance of Snow, 100% Chance of Ride.

Se paso.

Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge May Close During Inclement Weather

According to the City of Omaha Official Web Site, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge may be temporarily closed due to inclement weather and/or periodic maintenance.

During a presentation on the construction of the bridge during the 2008 Omaha Bike Summit on October 18, 2008, I asked about winter maintenance of the bridge. Someone answered that the bridge would be swept, but not salted or sanded.

I can understand how that would lead to icy conditions, but I feel a "cross at your own risk" policy would be more appropriate than an outright closing. This is especially important for year round bike commuters who have come to depend on the bridge for an easy and safe crossing of the river. Regular Winter bike commuters are well aware of handling icy riding conditions and should be allowed to continue to make the crossing.

If you have any questions or comments for the City, please contact the Parks Department at 402-444-5900.

Moments of Presence

This is another first post by yet another contributer, so it's an introductory sort. I'm eriK jensen, not to be confused with the transcendental bicycle wizard EB. Had I known there would be so many ericks about in my adult life I would've changed my name telepathically in the womb, but so it goes. Note the K. I write about my life's events, bike related and otherwise over here on another blog

I've yet to find a satisfyingly concise answer as regards the 'why' of my commitment to pedaling. I use bicycles for everything. Running errands, pedaling across town to work, or getting out of town entirely. Everyday I look to spend meaningful hours on the saddle.

I believe everyone has a duty to themselves to find a coherent ethic of practice through practical and empirical consideration. To find spirituality-giving, environmentally-responsible, and community-oriented practices in life is an imperative. These aspects are supported by immersion into a two-wheeled and self-propelled world. A lifestyle reliant upon the bicycle relies on the responsibility of the self over the false conveniences of contemporary technology and automobiles. The bicycle is a divinely simple machine that is uniquely able to transcend many of the damaging aspects of contemporary life. Though one may not cause systemic change on her own, at least she is not part of the problem. Universalized, this practice can cause enormous revolutions. Our individual action teaches others, daily practice is most important. Ride your bicycle everywhere, and support communities that help make this possible.

You are in the world on a bicycle. You are not in so many other modes of isolated contemporary 'life.' My favorite times on a bike come through getting outside the city, far beyond the boredom and monotony and confused lifestyles that plague it, and into true physical interaction with nature as such. Bicycling helps me to abandon a lifestyle that is too easily mediated and distanced from meaningful interaction with nature and other humans.

snow at lewis and clark

I love to push myself hard in conditions that others might shy away from. Some outdoor knowledge and being prepared are all it takes. I want to share those things. I'm loving the snow and getting out in these storms. I'm loving riding across ice covered lakes on studs, climbing past cars sliding back down icy hills, watching people's flustered reaction to the demonstration that YES YOU CAN RIDE YOUR BICYCLE FOR PRACTICAL USES YEAR ROUND IN OMAHA AND YOU SHOULD BE DOING THIS.

My partner, Emily, riding on the repurposed Bridgestone MB-1 we built up for the snow.

I want offer my help to anyone who needs help getting started or getting a broken bicycle fixed. There's the community bicycle cooperative at 33rd and california (and if you don't know about it now you do), but sometimes that doesn't work out. Bicycling is expensive, no doubt about it, and we should try to share our tools and knowledge to keep each other on the road. So that offer stands, I have a pretty well-stocked basement shop and some knowledge I can share (email@gmail using radiophonicworkshop before that, written this way to help avoid spam)

I want to go on crazy rides in the middle of the night with others afflicted with a love of endorphin rushes and dopamine releases. In the best and worst of weather. I want to have a rally of studded bicyclists and do some laps on iced lakes before the winter's out. I want to grind gravel with everyone of you until we can't stand anymore. I want to unlock the door for others that will let them spend a day on their bike in the midst of a blizzard, and I will post rides with this as the goal here as I watch for future weather. Tie your sleeping bag or bivy gear onto your bike, and let's go. I want to embrace this fragile life I hold and embrace the transcendent reality of miles spent in the saddle for pure enjoyment, all gained in an earth friendly manner.

pedaling out of the city during last night's snow

We must keep riding. Struggle to set the right example and help others get into cycling, into healthy communities, into happy and balanced lifestyles that are responsible to their impact in the world. It can all be unfolded through the bicycle. It all starts at the individual level. It all happens in those moments when you lose yourself to the immensity of experience without limits, done without regard for status, and embrace the actuality of the present moment.

How could one ever be bored with so many good things to see and feel! This unity with our joyous surroundings, this ultra-penetrating perception gave us a feeling of contentment that we had not had for years.
-Yvon Chouinard

Ok I'm done. From now on I'm going to keep it pretty concise, I promise you.

Beginning is such a delicate time

Couple of days ago Eric emailed me with link to this very blog. Since he has sweet stache and rides like 7billion bikes (not at the same time that would be a record) I figured what the hell I might as well contribute my 2 cents. While riding around last night we talked about some ideas and purpose of this site. I believe the purpose was explained by EB in one the earlier posts. The only thing I would like to share today is probably the one the reason I ride my bike. One of many reasons …So go and find your pedal adventure

What is this Place?

Many of you Omahan's know me, and realize my passion for bicycles and pedaling. Sometimes my passion and boldness get the better of me, o well-

Anyways, I want this blog to be a place where anyone who straddles a a top tube in Omaha and turns the cranks can post and have a voice.

So have an idea for a weekly ride, or have a favorite route you would like to share. It can be anything as long as you do it by bike. I'm not going to say all the different avenues and niches a bike can be, cuz I know I'll leave one out and comments will ensue.

Also along the local links, are some of my favorite places to eat spend money, yada yada yada....
I'm sure that some of you enjoy different places than I, feel free to add them and they can be anywhere, not just Omaha( But I'd prefer it if they were in the Big O, or Lincoln or NEBRASKA).

Or let the world know about the close call you had with a call or a squirrel that almost attacked you, I know great tales and adventures are out there. And thanks for everyone who has posted/commented. Lets not suffer in silence any longer.

So MOD, we gonna get a Sunday ride going or what?

And lastly, PEDAL OMAHA!

Thursday, January 8, 2009

Hold on to your Igloo.

Pedal Omaha. I do it, I do it quite a bit -- rain, shine, ice, fire, light, dark, puppies, kitties. This register (for me) will be a way to share events that happen when I interact on two wheels with the streets of our community. The good, the bad, and the ugly on these streets will hopefully evoke emotion in others as it does for me.

I find this blog would be a great way to share with everyone else the crap and the cake that happens in between heavy breaths and spinning cadences. Events such as this:

Yesterday (January, 7th) on my way to UNO, I was headed down Farnam approaching Saddle Creek. A block before the intersection a large truck pulls out and cuts me off. It's 5:15, I have lights on, I just may be invisible. Whatever.

I get up to the intersection at Saddle Creek and Farnam and stop. The guy in the truck is behind me. I could tell while going by him he wanted to merge into the left lane: He was glancing back over his shoulder while holding on to his lunch box as I slid by next to the curb. He had no opportunity to get over.

Suddenly the keeper of the lunch box revs his engine and quickly accelerates by me, his diesel engine resonating the air around me, (the Saddle Creek traffic has green arrows at the time) and takes a sharp left pulling into the now beginning to move traffic on Saddle Creek (stopping it), and then backs up into the turn lane on Farnam so he can turn once the arrow turns green. WFT (See illustration if this sounds as stupid as you think it does -- you are correct).

I don't recall if my jaw dropped or not, but I just sat and watched this. And I continued to stare until said idiot looked at me. I smirked and shook my head as I looked away. He then powered his window down and began to yell, "jibberish jibberish... or can't you afford gas?" He quickly rolled up his window as I screamed back, "What was that buddy?" as he gassed his F-250 Turbo Diesel and putted away with his yellow belly exposed. I was fumed, but life goes on, traffic moves on, and I continued to pedal.

Somehow his stupid ego-driven driving was my fault, I am sure. I mean come on, he pays taxes!

I invite others to share. It's fun to hear this stuff.

Pedal (Omaha err Oklahoma) err New Jersey

15 days back home in Omaha did my soul right. I saw old friends, rode new bikes, and realized once again that Omaha is the place to be. After high school I moved to Oklahoma to go to college. As of now I live in New Jersey, been here about three years now. For those of you coming to this site from Omaha: take advantage of the great people and places to ride in the area. Be part of a unique culture…turn the cranks and help make omaha a better cycling town than it already is.

Secondly, my new steed comes in the mail tomorrow. More info here

Thirdly: live in omaha? used to live in omaha? want to live in omaha? Into riding? Then send eric an email so you can post to this blog too.

Pedal Oklahoma City

I got a problem.
I'm siked about what is going on in Omaha. I'm psyched that efforts are being made to get out and stroke the cranks. I'm psyked that EB is syked.

You may ask "then what is your problem?".

Problem = I live in Oklahoma City.

I'm still trying to figure out if this place either has a weak cycling community, or a stellar underground gang unit that crushes everyday in a secret "fight club" sort of way and I've been excluded from it. The single speed revolution (no pun intended) has yet to fully snag The Big Town by the balls, other than a crew of skinny jean pimple pinchers cruising the downtown kicking in car doors at midnight. And the club rides are 15 mph conversation pieces where you go to show off your new carbon wheels.

So what should I do? I joined Pedal Omaha. Lucassclown and EB, and both are sexy bitches. So I figure they don't hang out with douche bags. Get in!

Guilty Pleasure

Growing up everyone has Heroes, whether it's your Parents, a Dog or Cat, or perhaps even a Police Officer. In my case it was MJ. Yeah, I think a lot of people liked Sir Air-Dunk.
I recall going to my neighbor Caleb's house & trying to shoot hoops in his Driveway turned Ball court, with the older kids from my NorthWest Omaha 'Hood. Most of the time I would end up watching, wishing I was Tall or Big. I could have used the height becuz my game was not what you'd call pretty.
Anywho, ( I totally jacked that phrase from Munson, thanks by the way)I loved the NBA and watching the Bulls of old with Pipp, Kukoc, Rodman, Harper and good Ol' Fire Crotch as Caleb liked to call him.

My neighbor and I watched games together and dreamt of every kids dream, being a professional athlete. And while I'm not in the NBA,(yet) I think I'm doing pretty well just Pedaling, and striving for others to turn the cranks instead of the keys.

Sailing High on Tomorrow's Pedaler

Words cannot express what I experienced this weekend. Scratch that this week.I learned and expressed things, had monumental life changing chats, and pedaled. But looking back on all these rides and conversations (with people that you've had man crushes on) and tears shed from a quiet place, (well with the Faint bumping in the background) I can say that its not about racing, or hey even bicycles and pedaling things-

Let me tell ya what its all about-

Day One

Ahh the first pedal revolutions were divine to the land of uncharted territory (sigh) West Omaha.
Really stinking odd to ride out there again, I think the last time was probably summer? I don't get out much people-
After a faster than expected gut check ride home to beat the darkness, I went to see this with a friend.
Not too shabby.
Oh, and there's some bikes to my left, I like em alright.
