Activate!
Activate Omaha is shaking things Up!
Hello all!
There is a bill proposed in the legislature that I am sure you are aware of: LB 134. This would prohibit the use of eminent domain by Papio NRD's when building recreational trails. If passed, this would have a devastating affect on the ability to expand the trail system throughout the state. Normally they do not use this technique to acquire land, but if there is one, single hold-out on a whole trail system, it could eliminate the entire project. I believe this was introduced on behalf of a small number of landowners in Cass County affected by the planned trail from Omaha to Lincoln. If you have not done so I would encourage you and your peers to let your senators know how you feel. There is a hearing on this bill tomorrow at 1:30 PM in Lincoln before the Natural Resources Committee.(Happened Last Week Oops) Members are:
Sen. Chris Langemeier, Chairperson clangemeier@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Tom Carlson tcarlson@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Tanya Cook tcook@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Annette Dubas adubas@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Deb Fischer dfischer@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Ken Haar khaar@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Beau McCoy bmccoy@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Ken Schilz kschilz@leg.ne.gov
Furthermore, Papio NRD will be down there testifying on the passage of LB 160 which is their bonding bill. This would allow them a funding mechanism to build both water quantity and water quality structures. With these lakes, they usually design a trail around them. There are other elements of the bill to assist in funding the raising of levees and implementation of low impact development environmental situations. The ability to issue bonds would be within their current mil levy authority which is 4.5 cents. They currently assess about 3.5 cents on the dollar. The hearing is scheduled after LB 134. I sincerely encourage you and your peers to contact the above senators and express a favorable vote on LB 160.
Thank you!

Dundee Streetscape Redesign
Marty Shukert will be one of the leaders of the event. For those of you who don't know, Marty has been doing quite a bit of work through his design firm (RDG Planning and Design) and Activate Omaha (he's on the Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee) to design east/west bike routes throughout Omaha. He's also a cyclist himself, so he should be able to offer a friendly ear.
The brainstorming sessions are at Dundee Presbyterian Church (located at Happy Hollow and Underwood) and will be occuring at the following times:
Thursday, January 29th, 10am - 7:30 pm
Friday, January 30th, 9:30am - 5:30pm
This should be a pretty informal event. You can drop in for just a minute or two, or you can stick around for a few hours. The most important thing is that a bunch of us actually stop in and tell them what we want.

The Weekender/Frame Worthy Friday
We made it one more week, and I'm glad I can safely secure it beneath my belt and be done with it. So in the spirit of Festivus and all things Great, I offer up a weekend of Fun-N-Games, Mischief, Hi jinks and healthy spoonful of Hearty Eats.
If you're feeling lucky, then head on over to Bikemasters for their 12 hours of Troy. Dave gets pretty stoked for the indoor spin by including some of his personal favorite flicks. And you Do Not have to ride the entire 12 hours, just come and do whatever fits within your busy Saturday.
-Oh yeah it starts at 6am-
Don't even try to get tickets for Fortnight's show tomorrow at the Slowdown, because yep they're sold out. A band with another name for Fancy Manuscript is also playing with them. I have never heard of them though. So with that said I just may leave after Fortnight's set is complete.
Oh one more thing, this is why you deliver on a Bicycle.

MLK Ride Crashed by Mr. Freeze
Monday morning. Early. Blue Line. Rafal's MLK loop was shortened due to my improper foot covering and cold temps, yet it was highly enjoyable and worthy of a small visit from the blue toes and frosty giblets. What a motley crew our dynamic made.

End of an Era
Thursday evening Cinema Center closed it's doors for good, ending a run of spilled popcorn, post film discussions and kids pedaling to see Movies they shouldn't be allowed into. I recall many instances where I went there for a flick, even as a young boy my friend Cory and I would run or Pedal on snow packed icy sidewalks all in the name of Cinema.
After reading Bob Fischbach's article tears streamed down my cheekbones and I realized that was it, We'll always have the memories.

A BIG RIDE
I know there are some other good, tough rides out there that would be good times. Enchanted Circle in New Mexico, the California Death Ride, and I'm sure there are many others. It'd probably be a cool time to take a long weekend and head west this summer to ride in the mountains on an organized ride or something.
Any other ideas out there?

Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge May Close During Inclement Weather
During a presentation on the construction of the bridge during the 2008 Omaha Bike Summit on October 18, 2008, I asked about winter maintenance of the bridge. Someone answered that the bridge would be swept, but not salted or sanded.
I can understand how that would lead to icy conditions, but I feel a "cross at your own risk" policy would be more appropriate than an outright closing. This is especially important for year round bike commuters who have come to depend on the bridge for an easy and safe crossing of the river. Regular Winter bike commuters are well aware of handling icy riding conditions and should be allowed to continue to make the crossing.

Moments of Presence
I've yet to find a satisfyingly concise answer as regards the 'why' of my commitment to pedaling. I use bicycles for everything. Running errands, pedaling across town to work, or getting out of town entirely. Everyday I look to spend meaningful hours on the saddle.
I believe everyone has a duty to themselves to find a coherent ethic of practice through practical and empirical consideration. To find spirituality-giving, environmentally-responsible, and community-oriented practices in life is an imperative. These aspects are supported by immersion into a two-wheeled and self-propelled world. A lifestyle reliant upon the bicycle relies on the responsibility of the self over the false conveniences of contemporary technology and automobiles. The bicycle is a divinely simple machine that is uniquely able to transcend many of the damaging aspects of contemporary life. Though one may not cause systemic change on her own, at least she is not part of the problem. Universalized, this practice can cause enormous revolutions. Our individual action teaches others, daily practice is most important. Ride your bicycle everywhere, and support communities that help make this possible.
You are in the world on a bicycle. You are not in so many other modes of isolated contemporary 'life.' My favorite times on a bike come through getting outside the city, far beyond the boredom and monotony and confused lifestyles that plague it, and into true physical interaction with nature as such. Bicycling helps me to abandon a lifestyle that is too easily mediated and distanced from meaningful interaction with nature and other humans.
snow at lewis and clark
I love to push myself hard in conditions that others might shy away from. Some outdoor knowledge and being prepared are all it takes. I want to share those things. I'm loving the snow and getting out in these storms. I'm loving riding across ice covered lakes on studs, climbing past cars sliding back down icy hills, watching people's flustered reaction to the demonstration that YES YOU CAN RIDE YOUR BICYCLE FOR PRACTICAL USES YEAR ROUND IN OMAHA AND YOU SHOULD BE DOING THIS.
My partner, Emily, riding on the repurposed Bridgestone MB-1 we built up for the snow.
I want offer my help to anyone who needs help getting started or getting a broken bicycle fixed. There's the community bicycle cooperative at 33rd and california (and if you don't know about it now you do), but sometimes that doesn't work out. Bicycling is expensive, no doubt about it, and we should try to share our tools and knowledge to keep each other on the road. So that offer stands, I have a pretty well-stocked basement shop and some knowledge I can share (email@gmail using radiophonicworkshop before that, written this way to help avoid spam)
I want to go on crazy rides in the middle of the night with others afflicted with a love of endorphin rushes and dopamine releases. In the best and worst of weather. I want to have a rally of studded bicyclists and do some laps on iced lakes before the winter's out. I want to grind gravel with everyone of you until we can't stand anymore. I want to unlock the door for others that will let them spend a day on their bike in the midst of a blizzard, and I will post rides with this as the goal here as I watch for future weather. Tie your sleeping bag or bivy gear onto your bike, and let's go. I want to embrace this fragile life I hold and embrace the transcendent reality of miles spent in the saddle for pure enjoyment, all gained in an earth friendly manner.
pedaling out of the city during last night's snow
We must keep riding. Struggle to set the right example and help others get into cycling, into healthy communities, into happy and balanced lifestyles that are responsible to their impact in the world. It can all be unfolded through the bicycle. It all starts at the individual level. It all happens in those moments when you lose yourself to the immensity of experience without limits, done without regard for status, and embrace the actuality of the present moment.
How could one ever be bored with so many good things to see and feel! This unity with our joyous surroundings, this ultra-penetrating perception gave us a feeling of contentment that we had not had for years.-Yvon Chouinard
Ok I'm done. From now on I'm going to keep it pretty concise, I promise you.

Beginning is such a delicate time
Couple of days ago Eric emailed me with link to this very blog. Since he has sweet stache and rides like 7billion bikes (not at the same time that would be a record) I figured what the hell I might as well contribute my 2 cents. While riding around last night we talked about some ideas and purpose of this site. I believe the purpose was explained by EB in one the earlier posts. The only thing I would like to share today is probably the one the reason I ride my bike. One of many reasons …So go and find your pedal adventure

Hold on to your Igloo.
I don't recall if my jaw dropped or not, but I just sat and watched this. And I continued to stare until said idiot looked at me. I smirked and shook my head as I looked away. He then powered his window down and began to yell, "jibberish jibberish... or can't you afford gas?" He quickly rolled up his window as I screamed back, "What was that buddy?" as he gassed his F-250 Turbo Diesel and putted away with his yellow belly exposed. I was fumed, but life goes on, traffic moves on, and I continued to pedal.

LATELY I'M TRYING TO RIDE SLOW, YEAH SLOW
AND I HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT I'VE HAD MORE NEAR DEATH EXXPERIENCES.
tAKE TODAY WHEN SOM IDIOT IN A RUSH BEHIND ME NEAR 50TH AND FARNAM STARTED WAILING ON HIS HORN, I STAYED THE COURSE THAN BEGUN TO ACT ALL CRAZY LIKE AND BEGAN YELLING AND SCREAMING, THE LIGHT WAS TURING YELLOW WHICH, I THINK MEANS SLOW THE F**K DOWN. THEY REVVED ON THEIR PEDDLE, AND IN THE PROCESS CAME SO CLOSE TO ME THAT THETY BRUSHED MY ARM.THEY CONTINUED ON TO RUN THE RED LIGHT, AS CARS LOOKED DUMBFOUNDED WHEN THE CAR MINDYOU RAN THE LIGHT AFTER HITTING ME, AS I TRAKSTANDED UNTIL GREEN LIGHT GO.
HIT THE STREETS OMAHA!
Pedal Oklahoma City
I'm siked about what is going on in Omaha. I'm psyched that efforts are being made to get out and stroke the cranks. I'm psyked that EB is syked.
You may ask "then what is your problem?".
Problem = I live in Oklahoma City.
I'm still trying to figure out if this place either has a weak cycling community, or a stellar underground gang unit that crushes everyday in a secret "fight club" sort of way and I've been excluded from it. The single speed revolution (no pun intended) has yet to fully snag The Big Town by the balls, other than a crew of skinny jean pimple pinchers cruising the downtown kicking in car doors at midnight. And the club rides are 15 mph conversation pieces where you go to show off your new carbon wheels.
So what should I do? I joined Pedal Omaha. Lucassclown and EB, and both are sexy bitches. So I figure they don't hang out with douche bags. Get in!

Sailing High on Tomorrow's Pedaler
Words cannot express what I experienced this weekend. Scratch that this week.I learned and expressed things, had monumental life changing chats, and pedaled. But looking back on all these rides and conversations (with people that you've had man crushes on) and tears shed from a quiet place, (well with the Faint bumping in the background) I can say that its not about racing, or hey even bicycles and pedaling things-
Let me tell ya what its all about-

Day One
Ahh the first pedal revolutions were divine to the land of uncharted territory (sigh) West Omaha.
Really stinking odd to ride out there again, I think the last time was probably summer? I don't get out much people-
After a faster than expected gut check ride home to beat the darkness, I went to see this with a friend.
Not too shabby.
Oh, and there's some bikes to my left, I like em alright.
